Effects of on-line hemodiafiltration regimens and dialysate composition on serum concentrations of magnesium and calcium ions

Abstract Background Low-ionized magnesium and high-ionized calcium levels are associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in patients undergoing dialysis. We examined the effects of dilution method, substitution volume, dialysate on-line hemodiafiltration on total ionized levels. Methods Eighteen were randomly assigned to three groups: two acetic acid groups one citrate group. Five treatment conditions applied: pre-diluted hemodiafiltration, post-diluted hemodialysis. Results The serum evaluated found be unaffected by methods volumes. albumin leakage was approximately 3 g/session under pre-dilution conditions, 4–5 post-dilution condition. concentration decreased Conclusion parameters had a negligible effect calcium; however, use levels, probably because chelation.
